Water Chillers Working Principle

Step 1: Refrigeration Process

In a water chiller system, the refrigeration process begins with a chemical refrigerant circulating through a closed-loop system. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the water, which causes it to evaporate and turn into a gas.

Step 2: Compressor

The gas refrigerant is then compressed by a compressor, which increases its pressure and temperature. This high-pressure gas then moves to the condenser.

Step 3: Condenser

In the condenser, the hot gas releases its heat to the surroundings or to a separate water circuit. This causes the gas to condense back into a liquid.

Step 4: Expansion Valve

The liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure is rapidly reduced. This sudden drop in pressure causes the refrigerant to flash-evaporate, absorbing heat from the water.

Step 5: Evaporator

The now cold refrigerant circulates through the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the water, cooling it down. The water is then circulated to the desired application, such as cooling equipment or air conditioning systems.

Step 6: Repeat Cycle

The chilled water is then recirculated back to the chiller to continue the cooling cycle. This process repeats continuously to maintain the desired temperature of the water.By following these steps, water chillers are able to efficiently cool water and maintain the desired temperature in various industrial and commercial applications.
