How can I plump my lips without a lip plumper?

08 Apr.,2024

The Botox lip flip is one of the top performed cosmetic procedures for women looking to achieve big lips and fuller pout. But to maintain its amazing results, it takes commitment to follow post-treatment care and possible maintenance sessions with your plastic surgeon.

So how can you get a plumper lip look without the Botox injection? If you’re hesitant to get the neurotoxin injection or looking to switch treatments, you can consider cosmetic alternatives like dermal filler, lip implant, lip lift, and lip threading. You can also go all-natural by following a good skin care routine, doing lip scrubs, and applying a convenient lip plumper for fuller lips without the injections.

Non-Botox Cosmetic Treatments for Bigger Lips

It’s perfectly normal for our lips to change as we age. The loss of lip volume and the appearance of vertical lip lines and upper lip wrinkles are due to the deterioration of the collagen that keeps our skin firm, elastic, and smooth. The skin in the lip area is also more prone to damage from the sun and certain lifestyle factors like chronic smoking and drinking through straws.

When it comes to lip enhancement, the first treatment that comes to mind is Botox. For years, it’s proven its safety and effectiveness and has become the gold standard for anti-wrinkle and lip plumping solutions. It provides a subtle improvement to the lips without altering its shape and structure.

However, Botox is a neurotoxin and the fact that it comes from a potent substance can have some people thinking twice about getting the injections. You may also be considering its price or you have a fear of getting the consequences of bad Botox results as you’ve seen from the news and tabloids. In this case, it’s also wise to look at the options that can provide great cosmetic results:

1. Lip filler

A filler treatment is another great method for lip augmentation. Unlike Botox, it uses a material that is made of either collagen, silicone, or hyaluronic acid. Most filler injections are safe, especially hyaluronic acid filler, since it is a natural substance that is already produced in our body.

Hyaluronic acid is a clear substance that is abundant in the skin and surrounding the eyes and one of its essential functions is to keep the skin moisturized. Some of the popular HA filler brands today are Juvéderm, Restylane, and Belotero Balance.

Your injector may apply numbing cream to minimize pain during the procedure. They will then skillfully place the filler material in the lips to help restore volume, improve lip shape, and minimize fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and lip area. The procedure comes with low risks and the results are seen almost immediately and can last for up to 6 months.

2. Implants

While fillers and Botox are temporary lip augmentation options, a lip implant provides a permanent enhancement of the lips. An implant is performed surgically and it typically uses a material made of soft plastic silicone.

Another technique for lip implants is a fat transfer where a doctor uses fat from the abdomen and transfers it to the lips. They can also use tissue grafting where skin from the abdomen is used for the lips.

An implant is a great option for people who want longer-lasting results on their thin lip. To perform the procedure, the doctor will create an incision on the corners of the mouth. They will place a clamp into the site, serving as the tunnel where the implants will be inserted to the lips.

It can be done in 30 minutes to an hour with a recovery time of 1 to 3 days. After the procedure, you will feel minimal pain, swelling, and skin scarring but this can be remedied by medications and cold compress.

3. Lip thread

Lip threading is one of the newest methods for cosmetic enhancement of the upper lip. It uses small dissolvable threads to contour and add definition to the lip line. The threads are made of poly-L-lactic acid and when it is used in the lips, they can boost the production of collagen which can naturally improve the texture, shape, and appearance of the lips over time.

Lip threading may come with side effects like temporary difficulty with moving the mouth, swelling, and bruising. But like with most cosmetic procedures, it is a generally safe and effective treatment as long as performed by a trained professional.

This procedure involves creating a small hole in the corner of the mouth where a cannula will be placed. The threads are inserted through the cannula and they are pushed until they are located in the Cupid’s bow.

This provides a natural elevation of the upper lip so it looks full and gives you a better-looking pout. The threads will last for 3 months but you may still enjoy its results for up to 12 months even after they have dissolved.

4. Lip lift

A lip lift is another outpatient cosmetic procedure that is done surgically. It is performed by a skilled surgeon who will make an incision on the top lip area or more specifically under the nose. They will take the excess skin so that the space between the nose and the mouth are shortened, creating an elevation that will improve the shape and fullness of the lips.

This treatment is a great option for people who experience sagging of the skin in the mouth area which makes the lips appear thin and flat. Likewise, old age can increase the distance between the lips and nose so this alternative also works best to correct this space and restore it to its normal look. The lift is permanent but it doesn’t entirely stop your lips from aging so it’s still important to take extra care of your lips.

Natural Ways to Care for Your Lips and Get Fuller Pout

If you don’t want to undergo any plastic surgery or cosmetic procedure, your best bet to achieve full lips is to dedicate yourself to a skincare routine that will help keep your skin healthy and young. Here are some dermatologist-approved tips that you can follow to naturally plump your lips:

1. Exfoliate your lips using a lip scrub

Exfoliation is a popular way to restore the skin’s youthfulness by removing dry and old skin. You can do the same to your lips by using a lip scrub or homemade exfoliating treatment to eliminate flaky skin on your chapped lips.

You can exfoliate at least twice a week by applying a moisturizer or oil to your lips. A good lip scrub contains an emollient (which acts as base to make it easier to put on the lips) and any natural exfoliating ingredient such as cinnamon, coconut oil, honey, shea butter, and sugar.

Use a toothbrush to gently brush the exfoliating solution over your lips. Do this in a circular motion to remove the dry skin on your lips and afterward you can moisturize with a lip balm product.

2. Invest in a good lip plumper product

A lip plumper is a beauty product that works like lipstick or lip gloss but it contains plumping ingredients to achieve a volumizing look. These products have mild irritants like menthol, ginger, peppermint, and capsicum which increases the blood flow to cause partial swelling that will result in temporary fullness of the lips. Some lip plumpers also have hyaluronic acid so that the lips will look smooth and moist after application.

3. Add lip liner to your makeup routine

Many celebrities and makeup artists advise using a lip liner to prevent smudging of your lipstick and make the color stick longer on your lips. It’s carefully applied on your lip border, giving highlight to your lip line and making it more pronounced. Likewise, the outline will give an illusion of fuller looking lips so you can enjoy natural duck lips. Just be sure to have your lip liner match your lipstick shade so it will blend easily.

4. Moisturize your lips

You can do this by using topical serums that are rich in hyaluronic acid. When they are absorbed by your lips, they will begin to hold moisture that will keep your skin plump and prevent it from drying up. Cocoa butter is another ingredient that can provide an extra hydrating layer to your lips so they are protected from chapping and cracking. Of course, drinking lots of water helps supplement moisture not only to your lips but also to your skin.

5. Use essential oils

Essential oils also help hydrate your lips and give it their luscious and natural glow. Some oils also have antioxidants that repairs your lips and restores its smooth texture and prevents it from further drying. The common essential oils used by beauty gurus are peppermint oil, chamomile oil, lavender oil, and lemon oil.

6. Do facial and lip exercises

Facial yoga focuses on moving the lip and mouth area to help minimize wrinkles and fine lines. Some of the common exercises are puckering your lips, creating an “O” shape, or pulling at the sides of your mouth and contracting them at least 20 times. When done correctly, these routines can also stimulate blood flow and collagen production to tighten your skin.

Plump Lips Without Injections

Very few will argue that today, plump, full lips are more desirable and in demand than ever before. Unfortunately, not all of us have been graced with naturally plump lips. So, to keep up with the demand for fuller lips, new topical and injectable solutions have been brought to market. While injections may offer the most obvious and immediate plumping effects, many patients simply don’t want to go that route and Dr. Szymanski is here to give you options.

Before we get started, it is worth noting that non-injection and non-surgical plumping techniques are neither permanent nor will they change the shape or size of your lips. They are simply intended to maximize the look of your lips for as long as possible.

What Makes Lips Plump?

To understand how to make your lips look fuller, we must discuss the very basic issue that affects their look and feel – moisture – how moist they are and how they are retaining that moisture. Think about a cold day with low humidity and how your lips shrink to minimize moisture loss. Well, with the right lifestyle and products, we can lock that moisture in and maximize its cosmetic effects…

Step 1:

As a first step, we must start with baseline health and that includes diet and exercise. Here are a few tips and tricks:

  1. Drink lots and lots of water. You should be drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day so you can stay hydrated from the inside
  2. You may wish to consider collagen enhanced powders or drink mixes. While their effectiveness is by no means proven, they may move the needle. See our discussion on collagen supplements
  3. By losing some weight, you can enhance the look of your lips, even if they don’t increase in size. By losing some fat around the jaw area, you increase the focus on your lips.
  4. Use plenty of lip moisturizer and lip moisturizing lipstick. This is helpful to keeping the moisture locked in day in and day out.

Step 2:

Once you’ve improved your body’s baseline hydration, we can start to add some proven lip plumping techniques!

  1. You’ve probably heard of hyaluronic acid. This moisture retaining compound can do wonders for your lips. In fact, it is commonly used in injectables too because it can hold many times its weight in water. Hyaluronic acid is produced by the body and does not break down as quickly as other topical applications.
  2. There are several prescriptions and over the counter plumping creams and ointments that improve blood flow in the lips temporarily. Remember, these are not long-lasting options but can be great for a night out
  3. You can also come into the office and have a consultation with Dr. Szymanski about lip filler options. Despite a possible hesitation toward injections, Dr. Szymanski can talk to you about a number of techniques and can help you decide on one that makes the most sense.

What to Avoid

Unfortunately, in the never-ending search for the perfect lips, many people make the mistake of using unproven or even downright dangerous options. When used properly an under the guidance of a medical professional, electrical and suction devices may offer some short-term benefit. Others visit unlicensed cosmetic practitioners.  Sadly, some can end up with short or even long-term disfigurement if it goes wrong.

Next Steps

Take the time to understand all the options regarding topical and non-surgical lip filler. Speak to an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Szymanski who can offer you the pros and cons of every option from the least to most invasive. We look forward to helping you achieve the lips of your dreams!
